On Tuesday, Oct. 24, Becton held an assembly with nationally renowned psychotherapist, author, and television contributor Tom Kersting. Kersting has traveled the country speaking in schools, and churches, as well as to parents, families, and corporations delivering this important message. He has been on television programs such as Today Show, Good Morning America, Fox News, Tucker Carlson, and many more. Tom knows all the latest research, studies, and facts about the dangers of over-device use, which he discusses more in his book, “Disconnected: How to Protect Your Kids From the Harmful Effects of Device Dependency.” His latest book is, “Raising Healthy Teenagers: Equipping Your Child to Navigate the Pitfalls and Dangers of Teen Life.”
Kersting was discovered by Supervisor of Guidance, Marc Caprio, who had recently come across Kersting in a local town event, where he was able to hear the effects that device dependency can have on teens. By speaking with the students of Becton, Kersting was able to open the eyes of the students and reiterate what many of us know, but reaffirming it can help with taking a step back and realizing the consequences of our daily actions.
One student mentions, “While I knew that technology was taking over, I did not see the effect that it truly has. After listening to the guest speaker, I might try and incorporate the techniques that he showed us to slow down and live in the present.”
The techniques that Kersting explained were to take 10 minutes out of your day, without any forms of distractions, and live in the moment. You can try meditating during this time, or clear your thoughts and set an intention for the day. Another tip that he spoke about was to get an alarm clock and leave your phone somewhere else. While it is tempting and practical to have the alarm system in place on your phone, it can cause more distractions. In the beginning, these actions might be difficult but can be rewarded as you get used to them.
Thanks to Tom Kersting, we are able to take a deeper look at the actions that we make from day-to-day or even minute-to-minute.
