The Becton Winter Track & Field team has delivered an impressive performance at the midway point of the season, breaking more than ten school records and continuing to build momentum in just the fourth year of the program. Despite freezing temperatures and snowy conditions, the Wildcats have remained focused, showing steady improvement week after week.
One of the standout athletes this season has been senior Zuri Thorn, a shot put competitor who opened the year by breaking her personal record and later matching it again. Thorn set a goal to throw beyond 35 feet while continuing to refine her technique. She credited much of her progress to having a dedicated throws coach for the first time. According to Thorn, working closely with Coach Dorsey has made a noticeable difference in her development and confidence.
Another senior making a major impact is Richelin Gbaguidi, who has excelled across multiple events including long jump, high jump, sprints, and relays. One of his most memorable moments this season came when he recorded a jump that ranked within the top 20 in the state of New Jersey. Gbaguidi has set ambitious goals for the remainder of the season, aiming to qualify for the New Jersey Meet of Champions and place in the top six at the Bergen County Meet of Champions.
Coaching has played a significant role in the team’s success. Coach Dorsey described the season as “a rip-roaring good start,” noting that the Wildcats have already surpassed expectations by breaking double-digit records before championship season begins. He emphasized that the team’s original goals were simple—breaking and having fun—and believes the athletes have succeeded on both fronts.
Dorsey also acknowledged the challenges posed by winter weather, referencing early predictions of a harsh season. Despite the cold and snow, he praised the team’s consistency and dedication. Looking ahead, he expressed excitement as the Wildcats approach championship competition, including their historic debut at the State Group 2 Relays, along with appearances at the Bergen County Relays, NJIC Championships, and the North 2 Group 2 State Sectionals.
Coach Dorsey also reflected on the program’s growth, pointing out that Winter Track has now become a permanent part of Becton’s identity. “This is the fourth year of Becton Winter Track & Field, which means no student at Becton Regional lived in a time where there was no program,” he said. “The present and future are bright.”
Additional support has come from Coach Geraghty, who has gone above and beyond by offering summer training and helping athletes refine their techniques. Together, the coaching staff’s dedication has helped keep athletes motivated and competitive throughout the season.
As championship season approaches, the Wildcats are eager to continue representing Becton on a larger stage. With records already falling and pride in the program stronger than ever, the team is determined to keep building its legacy and make this season one to remember.
