Throughout the month of February, Becton Regional High School has been proudly recognizing American Heart Month through a series of school-wide activities aimed at raising awareness and supporting heart health initiatives.
Staff and students have come together to support the cause in several meaningful ways. One of the month’s highlights is the Annual Blood Drive, scheduled for Wednesday, February 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nearly 90 staff members and students have signed up to donate, demonstrating strong community support for an event that helps save lives beyond the walls of Becton.
Earlier in the month, students and staff showed their support visually by participating in National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 6. By wearing red, the Becton community stood in solidarity with those affected by heart disease, particularly women, who are disproportionately impacted by the condition.
In addition to in-school efforts, an online donation page has been made available throughout February, allowing students, families, staff, and community members to contribute directly to the American Heart Association. The fundraiser has already exceeded expectations. According to Ms. O’Driscoll, “Our school’s goal was to raise at least $500 and we have surpassed that already, only being halfway through the month. We currently raised $603.20! I hope we can continue raising more and maybe even double it.”
Physical education classes have also joined the effort with a new initiative titled “Which PE Class Has the Most Heart?” Each Friday in February, PE classes across periods 1 through 8 compete in a series of fitness challenges, including bench press, shuttle runs, planks, and half-court shots. Classes earn points based on their finishing place in each challenge, encouraging teamwork, school spirit, and healthy competition. The top two classes will earn free walking passes in the spring when warmer weather arrives.
By combining education, fitness, service, and fundraising, Becton’s American Heart Month activities highlight the importance of heart health while bringing the school community together for a cause that truly matters!
