On September 26 2024, senior captain Saif Ahmed scored his 62nd career goal against Saddle Brook in a 6-5 overtime win. His goal not only secured the win, but secured his place as the school record holder for most goals. It was through this outstanding achievement, among others, that Ahmed was awarded North Jersey Male Athlete of the Week.
Ahmed was introduced to soccer at a young age through practicing with his dad, and it was not until he moved to Maywood that he played on both a travel and recreation team. His passion for the game continued as he joined Becton soccer his freshman year, making his debut in his fifth high school game versus Bergen Charter. Becton was down 3-2 in the last five minutes and head coach Mike Furino told him, “Go in as a striker and score goals.” In those last five minutes he scored his first two varsity goals and won the game. After that, Ahmed became a striker and started scoring goals one after another.
Ahmed has not always played at the top. His versatility and switch from the midfield position accentuates his ability as an all around key player. He notes, “I wasn’t the type to score a lot of goals. I liked assisting more and was more of a passer, but as I started high school I was put into striker because I was good at finishing plays and after that I just became the goalscorer for the team.”
Closing out his final season with Becton soccer, Ahmed thoughtfully looks back at his outstanding accomplishment and soccer career as a whole. Ahmed explains he is not only proud of himself for breaking the record, but was a bit surprised noting he would have never expected it. He writes, “I worked hard for everything and I’m glad I can leave a footprint at Becton as I prepare for college.”
Ahmed attributes his success on the field to his teammates, family and coaches. Their unwavering support both on and off the field has shaped him into the player he is today, and the legacy he is leaving behind at Becton Regional.
The captain’s accomplishment is sure to leave a lasting impression on boys soccer for years to come. As Ahmed looks forward to his senior year at Becton, he hopes to lead by example with his dedication and hard work, setting the tone for younger players. Ahmed shares, “I hope to inspire my younger teammates by showing them that they can accomplish great things, that a little hard work goes a long way, and that they too are capable of achieving what I am doing.”
Looking ahead, Ahmed plans to attend college, considering Rutgers New Brunswick where his goal is to major in STEM with a computer based concentration. He has decided not to pursue the sport at the collegiate level, opting instead to embrace a new chapter in his life. As he steps away from the field, he carries with him the memories, discipline, teamwork, and perseverance the game has taught him—skills that will undoubtedly guide him as he embarks on his new journey.
