With a roster of 70 players, Becton Football has experienced nearly a 25% growth since last season. As of the 2024-2025 season, the team boasts an impressive undefeated record of 4-0.
While this season holds the potential for various outcomes, many agree that the opening game against Lyndhurst was likely the most significant match of the year thus far. Coach Maher noted that the players had limited time to prepare, stating, “Our first day of camp was August 12, and our first official game took place on August 29. When you do the math, that’s not a lot of time for comprehensive preparation.”
Well over thirty years ago, Becton and Lyndhurst established a tradition of holding an annual Thanksgiving Day football game. This event, filled with enjoyment, persisted for many years, with a trophy awarded to the winning team each year. Although the Thanksgiving game eventually ceased, the tradition of the trophy has endured. Following their victory over Lyndhurst, Becton retained the trophy once again.
This year’s team differs from others because of the team’s companionship and chemistry. Junior Justin Reilley comments,“There are many role models on the team that can be looked up to. If I had to choose one, it would be Brandon Osorio. He’s a great player who can do it all.” Sophomore Elijah Davis agrees that the team’s relationship has been strong, built on communication. “We’re always talking to each other about what we did wrong or right. This team knows how to take criticism,” he commented. Sophomore Grant Padovano added, “I look up to most of the team. Adam Hassan has helped me with most of the skills I need to get better at, and of course Jon Palsi. His mentality and his aptitude have really proven that he deserved to be NJIC player of the week.”
Captain Jonathan Palsi was awarded NJIC Player of the Week on August 29. “Receiving that title felt incredible. I’ve been playing football since I was 6-years-old, so to be able to truly see how far I’ve come with such an amazing achievement feels awesome, ” Palsi declared. What makes this honor even more remarkable is the incredible resilience Palsi has shown thus far in his Becton football career. Towards the end of the 2023 season, Palsi sustained an injury against St. Mary’s. “Jonathan Palsi has responded immensely since coming back from a season ending collarbone injury,” Coach Jack Maher applauded.
Coach Maher believes that this year is going to be a successful one. He mentioned, “I feel like the future of Becton Football is as bright as it has ever been.” Coach Gregory Barbo also has high hopes for this year, hoping to receive an NJIC title. Davis is confident that if the team continues to strengthen their bonds and support one another, the season could lead to a spot in the championship.
According to Coach Maher, several players are set to make a significant impact this season. On the offensive line, seniors Adam Hassan, Kristian Fragoso, AJ Petrella, and Jayiem Gilkes have been instrumental in ensuring the offense operates smoothly. Junior Lucas Frank has also distinguished himself with his performance this season. On the defensive side, senior captain Brandon Osorio, along with junior captain Everett Bell and junior Patrick Lynch, have consistently pushed themselves to improve. Additionally, sophomores Messiah Dunbar and Preston Pitts made notable contributions during the week one victory against Lyndhurst.
While Becton may have approached past seasons with apprehension about facing other teams, Palsi now expresses a newfound confidence, stating that the team is ready to embrace any challenge that comes their way. Are we witnessing the dawn of a new era of excellence for Becton Football?
