Key Club & junior class raise heart disease awareness at Becton

The faculty, staff and students wore red on February 3 for Heart Health Month.

Key Club Adviser Mrs. Bonanno and Junior Class Adviser Ms. O’Driscoll paired with the American Heart Association to create a fundraiser campaign to raise awareness for heart disease. By allowing faculty and staff to wear jeans and a red shirt and students to wear hats for a small donation, both clubs raised the awareness needed for such a prevalent disease.

Together, almost 50 teachers and students wore red on Friday, February 3 and nearly $300 was raised. Approximately $230 came from the faculty and staff and about $50 from Becton students. Along with raising awareness for the disease, Mrs. Bonanno hopes that this fundraiser will encourage students to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Moreover, every morning for the remainder of the month, there will be a heart fact announced that pushes the healthy mindset to students and staff alike. Also, to further the act of donating, there will be donation buckets displayed around the school.

A heart disease bulletin board has also been added in the hallway near the main office. Since it is an area of high traffic, it will display a little extra information to those willing to find out more about the disease.
