On Tuesday, Feb 11, Becton held their annual blood drive. The blood drive takes units of blood from every volunteer donor to get tested, eventually to help people in need of a blood transfusion. Anyone above the age of 16 was given the opportunity to donate. This year, a total of 22 people donated, including two staff members.

The process can seem intimidating to some but is actually quite simple. A detailed health questionnaire helps determine if you are eligible to donate blood. An attendant then pricks your finger to check iron levels with a small blood sample. Following that, they assess your vitals, including blood pressure, temperature, and pulse. Once cleared, you are ready to donate. While sitting in the donation chair, it only takes up to about 10 minutes before the process is over. Volunteers in the gymnasium assisting the blood drive, including seniors Noella Turla, Abigail Lobil, Marisa Sclafani, Karolina Rupinski and Charlotte Ferriolo, provided snacks and juice to replenish sugar after students and staff donated.
While 11 students were unable to donate during the screening process, their willingness to participate highlights the strong spirit of generosity within the student body.

Becton English teacher, Mr. Vincent Sommese, donates blood about four times a year, and luckily he was due for another donation by the time the blood drive rolled around. “Donating blood is a safe, simple, and goes a long way in saving lives,” Mr. Sommese commented.
Mrs. Carly Blake also donates blood whenever she is able to. “My daughter has had many health issues and multiple surgeries. If I can help a little girl like mine, I would give it all,” Mrs. Blake spoke proudly. She has hopes to donate platelets because of her rare blood type. Less people tend to donate platelets as it is a more difficult process.
Junior Sophia Romano also enjoyed the process of donating blood. “I would totally donate blood again, knowing that I could help someone in need and potentially save someone’s life,” she stated happily.
Student Activities Coordinator and therefore organizer of the blood drive event, Ms. Jessica O’Driscoll, was happy to thank the office administrative assistance, as well as Mr. Matos and his maintenance team for their help in setting up the blood drive. School nurses Mrs. Cantatore and Mrs. Gemelli were also acknowledged for checking in throughout the event and assisting with setup. Dr. Sforza, Mr. Bononno, Mrs. Colangelo, and the Board of Education members were also recognized for their support in approving the event. The volunteers of the event and staff who accommodated the students who needed to miss class are also sincerely appreciated.
The blood drive also coincides with American Heart month, supporting and raising awareness for people who have, had, or will get a heart disease or any type of heart and blood issue. Becton is raising money during this month through Paws for the Cause, with all proceeds going directly to the American Heart Association. Donate now through the end of February!
