Becton’s October Student of the Month has been chosen as Akash Sathish!
Taking six AP classes consisting of AP Literature and Composition, AP Government and Politics, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus, AP Computer Science A and AP Statistics, it’s no wonder Sathish is this month’s awardee! “Being Student of the Month is an honor for me, and it signifies recognition of my hard work and dedication,” Sathish expresses wholeheartedly, “It motivates me to continue striving for excellence and inspires me to be a positive influence in my school community.”
Sathish takes part in a multitude of extracurricular activities at Becton, and within a number of them, he holds leadership positions. He explains, “I am a member of the Robotics Team, Math Team, Chess Club, Multicultural Club and Peer Leadership. I am also a member of the English Honor Society (EHS). In addition to these roles, I also take on leadership positions: I serve as the President of the Images Club, Peer Leader in the Math Honor Society (MHS) and Vice President of the National Honor Society (NHS). Furthermore, I am the Captain of the Varsity Tennis Team and a Peer Leader in the Wellness Club.”
Sathish continues to amaze onlookers with even further achievements, “My participation extends beyond leadership, as I have also won a prize in the talent show, and have led yoga and meditation initiatives at Becton, the Maywood Public Library and Middle School. I am also in the process of starting a Computer Science Initiative for like-minded students to get together to learn about different computing fields, code with friends, and discuss tech trends.”
Friends and teachers alike have nothing but great things to say about the October recipient! Senior Sonal Shahanif, friend of Sathish, talks about his work-ethic, “The amount of diligence and dedication he gives to work is admirable, and the fact that he does it with such perfection, along with balancing his school and personal life, is commendable.”
In a similar statement, Mrs. Kathryn Scalera offers a perspective as Sathish’s teacher, “From the first time I met Akash in English 10 Honors, I could tell how truly driven he was to learn. He wants to continuously acquire knowledge and that is rare in a high school student,” she attests, further explaining, “Akash has always been driven in the classroom, but it has been nice to see how much he has grown as a student who also now is so involved in the Becton community. All teachers know Akash because of his truly genuine conversations he has with all of the teachers each and every day in the hallways. There is never a day that goes by that Akash does not say ‘good morning’!”
Mr. Bill Carr, echoing sentiments expressed by both Shahanif and Mrs. Scalera, provides firsthand observations of Sathish’s work in class: “There are some assignments I could swear he had finished before I posted them,” and he humorously adds, “He has also gotten a bit taller!” Mr. Carr concludes, “Akash is someone who has come to figure out what is important and what isn’t.”
Sathish explains that in order to balance his school and personal life, he sets specific goals for himself and creates a schedule, breaking his time up into segments in order to fulfill each individual task. He claims that this endeavor helps him to not feel overwhelmed with all of his work. The effort of taking all of his leadership roles and AP classes has helped him “improve my time management skills and learn how to balance multiple responsibilities effectively,” he concludes. With the free time that he creates, he spends time with his friends and family, plays tennis and explores new places!
“My advice for students who want to be Student of the Month is to strive to do everything you pursue to the best of your ability– giving it your all,” Sathish advises attentively, putting emphasis on students taking part in extracurriculars, “Engaging in activities, clubs, or volunteer opportunities not only helps you develop new skills, but also shows your commitment and dedication, which are qualities that are often recognized and appreciated.”
Sathish’s future is carefully planned and he has nothing but excitement for what’s to come. After high school, Sathish plans on earning a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, striving to become a Data Scientist. “This advanced education will equip me with the necessary skills and knowledge to analyze complex data sets and contribute to innovative solutions in the tech industry,” he further explains, offering, “I’m excited about the potential to work on impactful projects and drive data decision-making in various fields.”
We are excited to see Sathish’s future unfold, confident that his dedication and talents will lead him to achieve remarkable success. Congratulations Akash Sathish on receiving October Student of the Month!
