Becton Bowling is Striking the Competition

Becton’s current Bowling Team.

Becton bowling is sparing no one, striking fear into the competition. The team is currently undefeated sitting at 12-0– led by Head Coach, Joseph Malyack, and Assistant Coach, Rachel Lennon. To keep things rolling, Becton Bowling has rolled the highest series in a decade at 2425 (that’s an 808 team average per game.)

Coach Malyack has high, and in his opinion, achievable standards for his team, “Our goals for this season are to bring home a title for Becton, perform at the state level as a team and individuals, and most importantly, to show the rest of our division what the Wildcats are capable of.”

Captain, Battistus.

Malyack shares how the team prepares for games, “Before a game my extraordinary assistant coach, Rachel Lennon, and I go over our opponents statistics, recent matches, and best bowlers to formulate a strategy to best compete with them. However, bowling is truly 95% a mental battle; going into the game with a good strategy of which bowlers to play where, what oil patterns will be laid down, and whether we are competing against our opponents as a team or individuals can make all the difference in a match.”

Leading the team are Captains Brian Battistus and Leah Rodriguez, who have both been a part of the program for four years now and are both a huge part of the reason the last few years of bowling have been so successful. This year, Battistus has bowled two of the highest scores in Becton Bowling history, a 277 and a 289. He is still in search of that perfect bowl of a 300.

Captain, Rodriguez.

Malyack commends his captains, “My captains are paramount to our success as a program. Brian Battistus and Leah Rodriguez have been captains since their sophomore years at Becton and they have truly grown into their roles as possibly the best leaders a coach could ask for. From their mid-game suggestions to their pre-match speeches, they truly embody what it means to lead by example.”

Battistus shares, “Being on the team means a lot to me. It is special to be in a leadership position and have other athletes look up to me.”

Rodriguez explains that the team’s chemistry is unmatched, “The team is very unique. What makes us special is how close we are. When one fails, we pick each other up, and move on.”

Finally, when both captains were asked their goals for the rest of the season and they both answered in excitement, “Win the whole thing.”
