Becton’s Annual Pi Day

The result of a successful Pi day!

Every year Pi Day is celebrated at Becton. Like most, you may be wondering what Pi Day is. Well, Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 since it is the third month of the year and the fourteenth day of the month which are the first three digits of π. This event was organized by advisor of the Math Honors Society, Joseph Malyack, and carried out by members of the Math Honors Society.

Here at Becton, we celebrate this day in many ways. During their math period, students went down to the Performing Arts Center and were introduced to activities that brought a more exciting perspective on Pi. These tasks include making a Pi chain, a scavenger hunt, rolling Pi on dice, cutting Pi, a Card Game, Longest Memorization, Archimedes Method, Where are you in Pi, Kahoot, and many more fun activities!

For the Pi Chain– students and staff were assigned a slip of colorful construction paper and each color correlated with a number 0-9. Visitors to this were able to draw anything they would like to be on the chain of pi. After this event was done, the chain of pi was hung in the math wing of the school. Next, students who were up for a challenge were tested to see how many digits of pi they could recite. The student with the most digits memorized won a prize of goodies! Furthermore, the scavenger hunt had students look around the PAC for things that correspond to Pi. Once students found all of the scavenger hunt items, they had to prove how each piece related to pi and they would win! Lastly, students were given the opportunity to roll three dice and have each dice roll to 3, 1, and 4 for each student. Recorders at this station would see how many tries it would take to reach this goal. Whoever got the digits on their earliest try won this station.

Coordinator, Malyack comments, “First of all, I would like to thank every person who participated in Pi day yesterday! Students were very engaged, and the event was bigger than ever. Thank you to all teachers who watched their students and assisted with crowd control! Thank you to our administrators, STEAM department head, main office staff, and custodial staff; without whom our event would not have been possible! Also, a thank you to the Math Honors Society students who continued giving mathematical lessons to crowds of students.”

Overall, Pi day was a huge success! Students were able to learn more about Pi in a new way all while being entertained and encouraged to do fun school activities!
