Becton football advances to round 2 of North 1, Group 1 playoffs
The varsity football team has impressively advanced to another round of the State playoffs. The team defeated Bogota on Friday night, Nov. 14, with a score of 51-14. With plenty of interceptions led by Senior Roy Rorys, Becton was able to score multiple touchdowns, leaving no room for Bogota to hold onto the ball.
The next round of States will take Becton to Verona, a team who is led by senior quarterback Frank Ferrari and recently defeated the Pompton Lakes Cardinals, 39-7. Senior Christian Henriquez noted, “We’re excited to go to the next round. If we play like we did last Friday, we should be able to get to the next round after that.”
“I hope they keep on going. They worked really hard,” said Head Cheering Coach Mrs. Scalera whose girls stand at the sidelines and cheer on the boys at every game.
If the team is victorious against Verona, they are going to MetLife Stadium for the final round of States.
Furthermore, another victory was achieved at last Friday night’s game. Roy Forys, who has been currently named The Record Male Athlete of the Week, passed his father’s second place record as the all-time lead scorer in a single season for high school football.
When attending Becton, his father held the position as first place from 1983 to 2003 when another player surpassed him, knocking him down to second. Roy was able to knock his own father down to third place, scoring 132 points and 22 touchdowns this season so far.
Beyond the excitement of receiving the honor, Roy is just as thrilled about his team’s success. “We just need everyone to keep their minds right. [We need to] keep doing what we’re doing and all the hard work is going to pay off in the end,” he stated.
