Special Education Teacher Mr. Symms and his geometry classes have recently enriched their minds with knowledge and experienced fun by attending a field trip to the Museum of Mathematics.

The Museum of Mathematics is an educational center dedicated to math and located on the eastern side of Manhattan. The building is a small, two-floor facility with interactive activities for anyone to participate.

To begin, Mr. Symms’ geometry classes had a 45-minute session with an instructor who discussed how math (mostly geometry) is incorporated into music and informed them of possible careers involving mathematics.

Mr. Symms enjoyed the unique museum with much delight, even though he was mostly supervising his students in the facility. He noted that although the facility is quite small compared to other museums, it does not lack in quality of interest. “I never expected a museum dedicated to math to turn out to be quite interesting,” he said.

The Special Education Instructor also mentioned that the interactive activities within the museum were composed mostly of geometric shapes, along with different exhibits about math in general. One activity he said that many of his students enjoyed was the bicycle with square wheels, in which participants had to pedal to get across circular obstacles. Also, there was one where a person had to balance on a platform in order to get across oblong, geometric shapes.

Sophomore Tyler Koch and Junior Robert Emord enjoyed attending the field trip. Tyler described the museum as ‘different and enjoyable’ with the various activities to be done. He stated, “The best part of the entire trip were activities and hands-on games that I played.”

Robert Emord also enjoyed the activities with the square-tired bicycle being is favorite.

Mr. Symms’ algebra class is scheduled to go to the museum this upcoming March.
