Becton cafeteria displays The Clothesline Project
Presentation encourages victims of violence to ‘break the silence’
On April 16, 2015, the Becton cafeteria housed numerous clotheslines, which displayed t-shirts designed by women who were once victims of violence.
The purpose of the project is to address the issue of violence and encourage victims, who can be both male or female, to speak out and seek help.
The presentation, which was hosted by Healing Space, a sexual violence resource center located in Bergen County, offers free counseling for those in need. Resources including a 24-hour hotline were displayed for any student in need of counseling, and mentors from Healing Space were available to answer any questions.
After numerous members of the Girls Helping Girls club showed interest in the topic of sexual violence awareness, the club moderator along with Caitlin Eckert, a licensed social worker and employee for Healing Space, decided to bring the project to Becton.
Becton is the first high school to host The Clothesline Project.
