EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – April 2025 – Becton Regional High School is proud to announce the appointment of Carlo Maucione as the new District Supervisor of Special Education Services. A familiar face in the Becton Regional community, Mr. Maucione brings over 15 years of unwavering commitment to student success. His extensive experience in the classroom, his leadership in extracurricular programs, and his reputation for compassionate service make him exceptionally qualified to guide the next chapter of special education at Becton.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Maucione has consistently demonstrated the ability to build genuine connections with students, understand their unique needs, and foster inclusive learning environments. His approach blends academic excellence with character development, ensuring students are equipped not just for graduation, but for life beyond high school.
“Working alongside Carlo for the past 11 years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the strength of his character, the integrity of his leadership, and the care he brings to every student interaction,” said Dr. Dario Sforza, Superintendent of the Becton Regional High School District. “Carlo leads with heart, humility, and a deep commitment to the mission of public education. His presence will elevate our special education programs and empower our entire team.”
Strategic Vision for Excellence and Inclusion
Mr. Maucione has outlined a bold, student-centered vision that prioritizes staff development, cross-district collaboration, and innovative programming. His plan includes regular professional development workshops to keep staff equipped with the latest tools and research in special education, while also emphasizing team cohesion and a shared mission of continuous improvement.
Over the past several years, Mr. Maucione has also served as Becton’s Coordinator of Student Support and Interventions, where he successfully led I&RS and 504 services. In this role, he demonstrated his deep understanding of early intervention practices and individualized support plans, which will further inform his leadership as Supervisor of Special Education.
One of his key initiatives includes uniting Becton’s three sending districts—East Rutherford, Carlstadt, and Maywood—through improved communication and quarterly collaboration meetings. These sessions aim to align services, address common challenges, and ensure consistency of support across all communities.
Keeping Students in their Home- Becton Regional
Under Mr. Maucione’s leadership, Becton aims to increase in-district student retention by reducing the number of students sent to out-of-district placements. By expanding programs and developing high-quality supports in-house, Becton will be able to better serve students while also achieving long-term cost savings.
“Every student deserves to be educated in their home community when possible,” Mr. Maucione shared. “It’s not just about saving money, it’s about building relationships, celebrating inclusion, and offering students a full, enriching high school experience.”
A Transformative Continuing Education Transition Program Rooted in Vision and Leadership
One of the most groundbreaking initiatives now underway is the development of a comprehensive 18–21 Continuing Education Transition Program, designed to start building skills as early as the 9th grade and empower students with disabilities as they step confidently into adulthood. This initiative reflects the long-held vision of Superintendent Dr. Dario Sforza, who has consistently championed a model that is authentic, inclusive, and future-focused, not just rethinking special education, but reimagining how we launch students into independent lives.
To bring this vision to life, Dr. Sforza appointed Mr. Carlo Maucione, a trusted leader with a track record of translating bold educational philosophy into transformative programming. Under Mr. Maucione’s direction, the transition program will blend life skills development, career exploration, and real-world readiness, while maximizing the use of underutilized district space to build a sustainable and fully integrated experience.
At the heart of this initiative is a belief that students deserve continuity, connection, and care, especially as they transition into adulthood. As Dr. Sforza often says, “Students shouldn’t be sent away to be understood. They should stay where they’re known.”
This model ensures students remain with the educators, case managers, and support systems that have guided them for years. It allows them to thrive in a setting where they are not just supported—but deeply understood.
Together, Dr. Sforza’s vision and Mr. Maucione’s leadership are shaping a new standard in special and transition education, one built not on separation, but on belonging.
Building a Stronger, More Inclusive Becton
Known for his collaborative spirit and team-first mindset, Mr. Maucione is focused on fostering a culture of open communication, trust, and professional respect among staff. He understands that a strong team is foundational to student success.
“Carlo is the type of leader who makes those around him better,” added Dr. Sforza. “His example sets a tone for excellence, compassion, and tireless advocacy. We are thrilled to see him step into this well-deserved role.”
Becton Regional High School is proud to welcome Mr. Carlo Maucione as Supervisor of Special Education. His experience, dedication, and forward-thinking approach will ensure that every student receives the support they need to thrive. This appointment marks an exciting new era for Becton’s commitment to inclusion, innovation, and community-rooted excellence.
