National Honor Society Induction Ceremony 2024

On Nov. 14, 2024, Becton’s National Honor Society held its induction ceremony, welcoming 29 new members. With its second-largest ceremony to date, the esteemed program now includes 70 members: 41 seniors returning for their second year, 10 newly inducted seniors, and 19 freshly inducted juniors.

To be eligible for an application to the National Honor Society, students must carry a GPA of 93.0 or higher. The application will feature questions about community service, leadership, extracurricular activities, participation in honors courses, AP classes and dual enrollment programs. To be selected, students must demonstrate excellence in the four pillars of the National Honor Society: leadership, scholarship, service and character.

In preparation for the ceremony, assistant principal and advisor, Mrs. Amanda Colangelo goes above and beyond to ensure a professional and memorable event. She begins by printing personalized certificates for each student and ordering balloons, flowers, cake, pins and enough candles for all the inductees.

Mrs. Colangelo also maintains a strong partnership with the maintenance team, recognizing their significant role in the preparations. “We coordinate with our maintenance team to arrange seating, hang banners, and ensure a staff member is available to manage lighting and music. Since the event takes place in the evening, we organize a small reception with a custom cake, cookies and drinks. The media center is cleared and transformed into a welcoming space for the reception, with tables set up and linens cleaned and pressed, “ she shared.

In the weeks leading up to the ceremony, students rehearse and Mrs. Colangelo reviews all speeches to ensure they are polished. Once everything is finalized, invitations are sent out.

Finally, the ceremony concludes with thank-you letters sent to everyone who contributed to the event. Mrs. Colangelo shares, “Every detail is thoughtfully planned to create a meaningful and unforgettable experience for our inductees and their families.”

The senior officers express their gratitude and are honored to represent Becton’s chapter of the National Honor Society. President Amanda Malave reflects on the pride she feels in earning the leadership position she worked so diligently to achieve, “It really highlights the hard work I’ve put in throughout high school. It is one of my biggest accomplishments, as it has urged me to be a role model to others,” she shares.

Treasurer Noella Turla voices her excitement about the opportunity to build a strong community with fellow members, “NHS is an organization that inspires students to become the best version of themselves,” Turla remarks.

Similarly, Reporter of the NHS, Sonal Shahani earnestly explains, “NHS to me is an esteemed society focused on societal and academic excellence, which I am very grateful to be part of, especially as an officer. It helps to keep me involved in school and helps me contribute to my community as much as I can.”

It was a wonderful night full of gratitude and excellence shared. Congratulations to all members of the 2024-2025 National Honor Society!

Gianna Viso is currently a senior at Becton, and this is her first year writing for The Cat's Eye View! Viso's friends would describe her as very talkative, extroverted, friendly and a kind person. Viso chose journalism as a way to express her social nature and showcase her interests. Currently a Varsity Cheerleader, a Boys' Baseball Manager, and a member of the Prom Committee during her junior year, it is clear that Viso enjoys staying busy. Her outgoing personality shines through, especially since she won Prom Princess last year! Viso loves to spend time with friends and family, as well as listen to music. Her favorite musical artist is SZA but she enjoys all kinds of genres. Another fun fact about Viso is that she is actually the last of four Viso siblings to graduate from BRHS! Viso is still uncertain about her future career path in college, but she has been working at a popular coffee spot in the community, Red Kettle, for about a year now and loves it! Viso truly appreciates the strong work ethic she has developed at Red Kettle, valuing the skills and dedication it has instilled in her.
