Earth Day is a world-wide event taking place on April 22 every year and is aimed to to rally and recognize support for environmental protection. It was first held on April 22, 1970, led by a former United States senator and governor from Wisconsin, Senator Gaylord Nelson. “Earth Day is an annual celebration that honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations” (education.nationalgeographic.org).
Becton Regional’s Environmental Club celebrated Earth Day by dedicating each day of the week to specific eco-friendly commitments:
- Monday (4/22)- EARTH DAY: Reflect on how our beautiful planet provides a home and resources for us. Spend time outdoors and listen to the sounds of nature.
- Tuesday (4/23)- ENERGY: Explore ways that we can conserve energy. Unplug all appliances and electronics when not in use.
- Wednesday (4/24)-FOOD: Take a pledge to use more reusable products such as glass storage containers and reusable water bottles. Try a plant-based meal!
- Thursday (4/25)- WASTE: Reduce consumption, Reuse items you already have before Recycling new products. Visit our composting bins in the greenhouse to turn your food scraps into soil.
- Friday (4/26)- NATURE AND WELLNESS: Appreciate the wondrous biodiversity of Earth by taking a nature walk and identifying as many living organisms as you can, using the iNaturalist App.
Additionally, on Friday April 26, Becton’s Environmental Club participated in Arbor Day by planting trees around campus. “Arbor Day sheds light on very important organisms that are often overlooked in human society,” says Becton science teacher Mrs. Dana Muniz. “It is a day to plant more trees and to reflect on their vital impact on human lives. Trees provide oxygen for animals to breathe and take carbon out of the atmosphere which helps reduce global warming. They also provide shade from the sun and are homes to countless numbers of organisms.”
Environmental Club Advisor, Ms. Calasso, shared some final thoughts on the success of Earth Week at Becton, “Our social media directors, Tausifa Islam and Kaylee Tuttle, have been working tremendously to create educational content and share information on our social media accounts. Our research committee also did a lot of work creating content for this week. All educational materials were designed by our club members to promote awareness and encourage our community to participate in eco-friendly activities!”
Becton encourages students to go out and participate in keeping not only our school’s environment clean, but our world as a whole clean and safe as well.
