Principal Dr. Sforza implements changes to cafeteria, lunch periods

The new school year has brought many new changes to Becton, and some of the most discussed include the cafeteria.

The choice of lengthening the lunch period, having one lunch period instead of two, and the use of the new auxiliary lunchroom has the whole school talking.

A few of the perks of having one lunch period instead of two allows students to meet with their club advisers, schedule extra help with a teacher or simply socialize with friends. Madison Jennerich, a junior here at Becton, stated, “I like being able to be with my friends at lunch.”

Custodian Supervisor Phil Caputo said that it is too early to tell, but so far, the student’s behavior has been fine. He remarked “so far, so good” with regards to the student’s reactions and behavior with the new lunch changes.

The adjustments to the lunch period may not have stopped either. Principal Dr. Sforza has stated that it may be possible for the gymnasium to be opened during lunch so that students can relax and play in the gym if they choose. He stated, “The administration is working with the physical education department to assess the supervision and the procedures that would need to be created in order for students to access the gym during lunch.”

Another change to the lunchroom dynamic is that the two lines to get food in the main cafeteria are split apart from each other to eliminate the confusion of having them jumbled up in the middle and to prohibit the action of line cutting. Dr. Sforza said that they are testing this new idea of having the lines split up to see how it works out.

The Becton principal also noted that he is testing out these various ideas to develop trust between students and staff. “The great thing about Becton is that the students and staff members are always looking for opportunities to grow. That motivates the administration to work hard to administer new and innovative opportunities year after year,” he said.
