Becton students volunteer at 19th Annual Teddy Bear Party

Seniors Amber Jordan, Tamia Anderson and Ashley Diaz donate their time to play with the children from Valley Hospital.

Art Instructor and NHS Advisor Mrs. Colangelo, along with the National Honor Society members, peer leaders and art students attended the Valley Home Care Annual Teddy Bear Party at Bergen Community College this past month to volunteer to help terminally ill children.

There were several events for the children to participate in such as creating crowns and tiaras, medieval-styled jewelry, and face painting. Furthermore, Becton NHS students pooled money together to purchase a large cardboard castle from eBay where the children who attended the event could draw and sign their name inside.

The night, which was designed around celebrating the childrens’ strength, beauty, and courage, invited family members to join, and every child was given the opportunity to leave with his or her own teddy bear to keep.

“Last year, one National Honor Society member was interning at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and brought this event to our attention,” Mrs.Colangelo said.

“Students who took place in the event received community service hours and a rewarding experience,” the NHS advisor added.

NHS member Luke Maffia said, “I wanted to do something for the community and help others. I loved helping the little kids and seeing how happy it made them when we made string bracelets.”
