Liberty Science Center trip reinforces real-life math & science

The Algebra II class walks through the Infinity Climber.

Mr. Symms’ Algebra II class visited the Liberty Science Center to strengthen their understanding of mathematics and science on March 21.

The Liberty Science Center in Jersey City is an interactive museum that is dedicated to numerous educational activities and events. According to Mr. Symms, the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City is an interactive facility that is dedicated to “a lot of hands-on activities for the students to do and even engineering activities.”

Activities and exhibits such as the Hoberman Sphere, Infinity Climber, Skyscraper!, and the Touch Tunnel were among the many memorable parts of the field trip.

The mathematics instructor said there were plenty of events for the students that incorporated what they learned in class. He specifically noted that the museum’s skyscraper exhibit and Hoberman Sphere had mentioned aspects that he has taught such as slope in steepness and dilation in size.

Mr. Symms stated that his favorite part of the entire trip was the viewing of the IMAX film, Dream Big: Engineering Our World. “I loved the movie. It showed ideas involving architecture and mathematics being involved in building great structures,” he said.

Dream Big: Engineering Our World is a film narrated by a famous actor, Jeff Bridges, who speaks about transforming how humans think about engineering. From the Great Wall of China and the world’s tallest buildings, to underwater robots, solar cars and smart, sustainable cities, Dream Big celebrates the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small and reveals the heart that drives engineers to create better lives for people around the world.

Being his first time visiting the Liberty Science Center, Mr. Symms noted that it was a phenomenal experience and that he would like to return with his class next year.

“It was a cool experience that I would definitely like to revisit again some time in the near future. The best part of the trip by far was the Touch Tunnel. It was like nothing I have ever seen before,” said Junior Kayla McGee.

Junior Fabrizio Jimenez said, “It was one of my more favorite trips that I have taken this entire year. All of the activities were extremely fun. It was better than I have ever expected.”
