The Becton Varsity Debate Team had its first tournament on October 16 in Tenafly, and after the day’s worth of debates was completed, the team brought home two trophies.

The resolve for the 2015-2016 school year encompasses governmental surveillance of the American people, so the debates were guaranteed to draw strong opinion and perhaps even get a bit heated.

Senior Ayah Suleiman, who attended the event along with three novice varsity debate teams, took home the Best Judge trophy in an impressive turn of events. Furthermore, juniors Ryan Strauss and Zak Kandiel won the Third Place Team trophy with a record of 3-1 and 96 points.

Debate Coach Mr. Shin called it “a fortuitous start to the debate season.”

The team isn’t one for resting on its laurels; however, and all of its members already have their sights set on their next Varsity Tournament on October 30 in Fort Lee.
